Hokkaido Snow from Tokyo: How to Add a Winter Side Trip
Tokyo, Giappone

GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort loads its gondola inside a Shinkansen station, 71 to 80 minutes from Tokyo Station. Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort opened on 31 October 2026 on man-made snow. Zao Onsen lights its rime-covered firs on 31 selected nights between 26 December 2026 and 23 February 2027.

Day trips by Shinkansen

GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort, Tokyo

GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort (Yuzawa) is the only ski area in Japan with its own Shinkansen station, and the walk from the platform ends in the gondola loading hall. Cabins climb out over a deep snowbound valley with bare birch ridges above. The season is confirmed from 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027.

An adult one-day lift pass runs ¥5,500 to ¥6,500. The return Shinkansen from Tokyo adds ¥9,000. The South Area's four courses and two lifts do not run this season, so check which side of the hill you are buying into before you pay. Rental, lockers and an onsen are on site, and the desks work in English, Chinese and Thai. Group lift tickets and lessons go through the resort or an agent.

Ishiuchi Maruyama Ski Resort (Echigo-Yuzawa) runs a free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa Station and turns its lights on at 16:00. From late December through February, 3,000 m of illuminated runs stay open nightly to 20:00: twelve floodlit pistes glowing pale blue-white down a dark mountainside, lift towers lit in a line, the lights of Yuzawa town spread out below. A night pass is ¥3,800 and a full day ¥7,900. The planned season is 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. From 26 December the resort shares the Yuzawa Snow Link pass with GALA.

Hunter Mountain Shiobara (Tochigi) opens on 28 November 2026, early for the Kanto region. It is under two hours from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen, then a free shuttle from Nasushiobara Shinkansen station. Wide, gentle pistes are cut through dense cedar and beech forest, with a long gondola line and onsen steam and food stalls at the base lodge. An adult day pass is ¥6,000 to ¥7,000. Broad, forgiving terrain and an onsen at the end make this the easy pick for first-timers, and the rental hall, ski school and snow-play park are all at the base.

Snow that is already open

FUJIYAMA SNOW RESORT YETI (Mt Fuji) opened on 23 October 2026, its 28th straight year as the first outdoor ski area in Japan to open, and runs to 28 March 2027. Narrow white strips of man-made snow lie on Fuji's bare southern flank, the volcanic cone behind carrying almost no snow of its own. Skiers turn out in costume on opening day.

The hill is short and entirely artificial, so take it for the date and the Fuji backdrop. A pass is ¥5,000 to ¥6,500. The direct bus from Shinjuku is reservable, and rental packages are sold on site. A snow-play and sledding area takes anyone in the party who is not skiing. The resort was long known simply as Snow Town Yeti, and the new name is the one to search under now.

Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort (Mt Asama) opened on 31 October 2026, the earliest Shinkansen-reachable snow in Japan, and runs to 31 March 2027. At this point it is a single white ribbon of machine-made snow laid down a brown-green autumn hillside, with the grey cone of Mt Asama behind and a large outlet mall at the base. The resort stages in all 14 courses by early January.

The snow is firm and artificial. The Hokuriku Shinkansen costs ¥6,000 each way, and an adult day pass ¥6,000 to ¥7,500. The complex is ski-in, with a beginner school, a separate snow-play park and bulk lift tickets for a party.

Linked mountains for a mixed party

Mt. Naeba (Naeba and Kagura) joins two mountains with the 5,481 m Dragondola, red-and-white cabins strung high over a deep forested gorge. The Dragondola itself runs only from 25 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Naeba's season is 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, and high-altitude Kagura holds from 28 November 2026 to 16 May 2027. That makes this the long-season bet near Tokyo.

An adult one-day Mt. Naeba pass is ¥7,500 to ¥9,000. Night skiing starts on opening day. English lessons and kids' snow parks run at the base, below the Naeba Prince Hotel's long curved concrete towers, where multi-day rates are quoted.

Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort, Tokyo
Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort, Tokyo

Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort (high plateau above 2,000 m) chains 18 separate ski areas across a national park, all on one all-mountain pass with free shuttles between them. A party can split by ability after breakfast and still be on a single ticket. Rime-frosted trees line the Yokoteyama ropeway, and snow-covered volcanic peaks stand in every direction with no buildings beyond the ski hamlets.

This is the highest, most snow-reliable area within reach of Tokyo. Kumanoyu targets 14 November 2026, and the shared all-mountain pass season runs 5 December 2026 to 5 May 2027. Online pass sales open on 1 November. An adult day is ¥9,500 and a student ¥6,500. Children pay ¥4,000 and over-60s ¥8,000. The snow monkeys are in the same valley.

Hoshino Resorts Nekoma Mountain, Tokyo
Hoshino Resorts Nekoma Mountain, Tokyo

Hoshino Resorts Nekoma Mountain (above Lake Inawashiro) is one mountain skied on both its north and south faces, 33 courses fanning off a single ridge. The flat blue sheet of the lake lies below the southern slopes, with Mt Bandai's blown-out crater wall opposite. A connecting lift merged the old ALTS Bandai and Nekoma Ski Resort into one rebranded mountain, so book under the current name.

The north side runs 28 November 2026 to 9 May 2027 and the south 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. An adult day pass is ¥7,000 to ¥8,500. BunkLodge NEKOMA, at the southern base, is bunk accommodation built for ski parties, with group lift products and lessons sold alongside it.

Deep snow around Tanigawa

Mt.T by Hoshino Resorts (Tanigawadake Tenjindaira) puts you in a 2,400 m ropeway for 15 minutes, up to a high snow bowl under the black vertical rock walls of Mt Tanigawa, deep untracked snow between gnarled beech. It is the deepest, most serious snow reachable from Tokyo in two hours. The lift-served area is small and the terrain it is known for is off-piste, so book a guided day through an operator if the backcountry is the plan.

The confirmed season is 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. An adult one-day pass is ¥9,000 with the ropeway included, and higher in peak periods. Snowshoe walks and snow tubing with rental gear cover a mixed group from the same base. The name changed to Mt.T after the Hoshino Resorts takeover.

Canyons (Minakami) guides snowshoe lines through silent native beech forest beside the frozen Yubiso River, with the serrated Tanigawa range and the roughly 1,000 m rock face of Ichinokura-sawa filling the skyline. It gets you into snow without a lift queue.

Private tours take one to six people and are priced per tour. Three hours is ¥33,000 and six hours ¥66,000. Each extra hour adds ¥11,000, and a party of six splits the whole figure six ways. Guides are fully English-speaking, the shuttle from Minakami and Jomo-Kogen stations is free, and there is lodging at their own base. Winter 2026-27 tours and lessons are open for booking.

Onsen villages and the light-up

Nozawa Onsen (onsen ski village) opens on 28 November 2026, with a first-ski period to 18 December. Steep narrow lanes are walled in by old timber ryokan and free wooden bathhouses, steam rising off an outdoor hot-spring laundry, snow banked above head height on either side of the street. A serious ski mountain sits directly above the old onsen town.

An adult one-day lift pass is ¥7,500 to ¥9,000. The 13 village bathhouses are free and take a small donation. Lodging, gear rental and an English ski school are all in the village. If the Dosojin Fire Festival on 15 January 2027 is the draw, a village room is effectively the ticket, because viewing is kept to village overnight guests and locals. Those rooms go many months ahead.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort (Zao Ropeway snow monsters), Tokyo
Zao Onsen Ski Resort (Zao Ropeway snow monsters), Tokyo

Zao Onsen Ski Resort (Zao Sanroku) ices its firs into hunched white humanoid shapes and lights them in shifting colours against a black night sky, a small ropeway cabin passing between them, sulphur steam in the village below. The 2026-27 juhyo light-up is confirmed for 31 selected nights between 26 December 2026 and 23 February 2027, 17:00 to 21:00, with the last ropeway up at 19:45 from Zao Sanroku.

A ropeway return is ¥4,400 by day and ¥4,600 for the night light-up. Ski passes cost extra. The heated Nightcruiser snowcat is sold online only and goes by date, so book it early for a party. The monsters are fully formed only from mid-January, and the light-up is cancelled in bad weather. Build in a spare day.

Snow days without skis

Jigokudani Monkey Park, Tokyo
Jigokudani Monkey Park, Tokyo

Jigokudani Monkey Park (snow monkeys) is the only place on earth with wild monkeys bathing in an onsen: macaques chest-deep in a steaming turquoise pool, caps of fresh snow on their heads, sheer gorge walls and a steam vent behind them. It opens every day of the year, 09:00 to 16:00 from November to March.

From 1 December 2026 the gate price is ¥1,000 for an adult and ¥500 for a child. Online it is ¥880 and ¥440, and a web ticket skips the window queue. Under-6s go free. The walk in from the car park is 1.6 km of snowy forest path, so a coach party needs time and sure footing. The snowy scene depends on a cold snap, and a date in winter will not guarantee one.

Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival (Nikko) packs hundreds of candle-lit miniature igloos in rows across a frozen riverbed, each glowing orange from within, with larger walk-in snow huts and a steaming onsen village behind. It runs 29 January to 28 February 2027, and the Sawaguchi riverbed mini-kamakura are lit Fridays to Sundays, 17:30 to 21:00.

Viewing is free. Local trains and a bus from Tokyo cost ¥3,000 to ¥4,500 each way. The site is designated a Night View Heritage of Japan and needs no skis, which makes it the best snow day for a non-skiing party. The hamlet is remote and high in the mountains, so arrange transport and dinner before you go.

Fujiten Snow Resort (Mt Fuji) sells its Mt Fuji View Lift and summit observation deck to sightseers, so anyone without equipment can ride up and stand on the small wooden deck at the top station. Fuji fills the entire view straight down the fall line, snow-dusted larch forest either side.

Fujiten Snow Resort, Tokyo

The skiing is modest, and this is the closest real snow to Tokyo on the Fuji side. The planned season is mid-December 2026 to early April 2027. An adult one-day pass was ¥5,500 on a weekday and ¥6,500 at the weekend in 2025-26, and 2026-27 prices publish by December. Opening is settled only in December, so confirm the date before you travel.

Dates to lock before you book

The Dragondola, the Zao light-up nights and the Dosojin Fire Festival all run shorter than the seasons around them, and GALA's South Area stays shut through this one. Book the Nightcruiser snowcat and a Nozawa village room well ahead, and confirm Fujiten's opening in December before you build a day around it.

See the Tokyo guide and the Tokyo hotel search.
